It’s MMFA’s joy to shine light on the ways our communities of faith are living as faithful and generous stewards. This month we’re featuring New Hope Moravian Church in Newton, NC, and their service with Ashure Ministries.
Members Tom and Margaret Schultz share,
“Ashure Ministries serves Catawba County, NC, by providing crisis assistance to those in need. This assistance includes food support, rent/utility help, and financial training.
We at New Hope Moravian Church go to Ashure the first Thursday of every month and work in their food pantry, preparing various bulk foods for distribution by Ashure. Typically, we have 6 to 10 church volunteers that work for 2+ hours bagging/boxing food items as directed by the Ashure staff. Ashure knows we come on this set day and gets us working right away on what they need.
We also have members that volunteer at Ashure on set days every week.
Ashure serves 150 to 250 families a day (4 days a week) through their food support services and relies heavily on volunteer help.
After working at Ashure in the morning, the volunteers enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, a great time of fellowship and getting to know each other better.”
When asked what impact volunteering at Ashure has had on him, Tom said,
“Working at Ashure Ministries has opened my eyes to the needs in our community and the excess food that would probably go to the landfill if not for operations like Ashure Ministries. It is a wonderful feeling to help an organization doing God’s work through a ‘win-win’ scenario to get food to people in need.”
